Top 10 Countdown of the Most Heartwarming K-Drama Foods
Every episode of Korean dramas takes us on a culinary journey, where the crunching and slurping of delicious Korean delicacies resonate as powerfully as the emotive soundtrack. K-dramas will whet your appetite, not just for romance, but for a scrumptious meal. Have you ever found your stomach growling while engrossed in your favorite series, your mouth watering at the mere sound of the Korean language? (The language alone sounds like someone enjoying a savory mouthful of rice.) Well, you're not alone!
Let’s count down what “K-Drama Kind of Life” considers the top ten most heartwarming foods, that have become stars of their own right, in the episodic realm of K-dramas.
#10 Japchae 잡채
My first ever bite of Korean cuisine and boom, it was love at first taste. This captivating introduction occurred while engrossed in the compelling series, 'Crash Course in Romance'. Here, our protagonist Haeng-seon, a charmingly humble owner of a side dish store, enters the scene. The characters and storyline were beautifully sweet but what was the series’ true star attraction? None other than the heavenly side dishes, namely Japchae!
In this series, Japchae is Choi Chi-Yeol’s, a celebrated academy teacher, stress-busting secret. Not only is it the way he relieves stress, it is the only food he can eat. With a tumultuous relationship between his demanding career and sensitive stomach, only Haeng-seon's Japchae seems to soothe his gastronomical woes and lonely heart.
What is this magical Japchae, you ask? It is silky sweet potato starch noodles, stir-fried to perfection with a colorful medley of vegetables. It's more than just a dish, like all Korean foods, it's a gateway to comfort, a tribute to the warmth that Korean cuisine pours into your belly and soul.
With each bite, you're not just satiating your hunger - you're embracing a culture, a tradition, and a delicious love story! Now, that's the real secret of our iconic K-drama foods.
#9 Chicken and Beer, aka Chimaek 치맥
The Koreans' love for beer and chicken is so intertwined that they've merged it into a single word, 치킨 chickin + 맥주 maekju = 치맥 Chimaek! This charming duo forms the heart of the popular K-drama romance, Business Proposal, where Hari's parents whip up magic at their bustling chicken joint, Goobne. Nestled by a local mountain, hikers venture the heights and then fill their bellies with the crunchiest chicken and the frothiest beer at Goobne. Goobne, an actual restaurant chain, seems to master the crunch of crispy chicken paired perfectly with a refreshing gulp of beer. Goobne is a bustling hotspot with delicious chicken goodness, spreading its magic across Korea and throughout Asia! Hopefully, you have a Goobne nearby and can give our #9 pick a crunchy bite.
#8 Porridge 죽
Immerse yourself in a slice of K-drama life with a bowl of Juk, or rice porridge, a cherished dish perfect to woo your sweetheart, especially when they're under the weather. This heartwarming porridge carries a magical charm, like Cupid’s arrow, that seems to bring hearts together. This bowl of love has invaded countless K-dramas, securing its place in the Top 10 K-drama food list. What is Juk’s secret? I guess we will only know when we experience a delivery ourselves. In Korea, Juk is a traditional comfort dish, served to the young, the old, those nursing a hangover, or battling a bout of gastritis. The variety is endless, from the heartening Chicken Juk, '닭죽', to the sweet and satisfying Pumpkin Juk, '호박죽'. So, prepare a pot of succulent juk, deliver it with tender care to someone special, and watch your very own love story bloom right before your eyes!
#7 Jajangmyeon 짜장면
Tracing its roots back to ancient China, this dish embodies a blend of thick noodles immersed in a black bean sauce. Its journey to the top ten list is marked by its role in many popular K-dramas but most notably in the critically acclaimed TV series, Hospital Playlist. One of the culminating scenes sees the main cast cherishing a Christmas meal of jajangmyeon. It is also the dish to be eaten on “Black Day”. On April 14th all the singles celebrate their solitude with drinking and jajangmyeon. The dish's entrance into Korean gastronomy began with its introduction by Chinese immigrants in Incheon. Customized over the years to please the Korean palates, this luscious noodle dish has become a staple meal in Korean society, at least according to my K-drama-biased research.
#6 Hangover Soup 해장국
If you've ever delved into just one K-drama season, you might already know that South Korea is akin to Asia's Ireland. Reflecting a rich social culture, drinking is wildly popular, often serving as a catalyst for blossoming romantic relationships as portrayed in our favorite dramas. Many a female protagonist is carried home after an evening of overindulgence, setting the stage for heartfelt interactions. Invariably, the next morning, a doting mother serves a soothing bowl of hangover soup or "Guk" 국. This flavorful elixir, often Haejang-guk, is seen as the ultimate remedy for hangovers. As a dedicated K-drama enthusiast, I've found myself increasing my soup intake. While I do not need a hangover soup, after a strenuous day, the comforting and warming charm of Guk is truly irresistible. Savoring Guk for breakfast might not be a quintessentially American tradition, but it's one I have started to incorporate more often. If only I had a halmeoni 할머니(Korean grandmother) to help me!
#5 Kimbap 김밥
For months I planned my Trader Joe’s, a gourmet grocery store, shopping days on Friday mornings to ensure I would be the first to stock up on the latest Kimbap delivery. Fort Worth, Texas does not have any other Kimbap shopping options. Kimbap is surprisingly simple yet gently satisfying. On days when my sensitive stomach acts up, nothing appeases my appetite like this rice roll. These rolls are a playful concoction of Gim, a dried sheet of seaweed, and Pap, cooked rice. It not only tickles your tongue to pronounce but also delights your palette. The most memorable scene featuring Kimbap is in the endearing drama “The Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” Our protagonist, Attorney Woo, appears to live by Kimbap alone, exclusively curated by her father, a Kimbap store owner. This Korean staple seems to be a constant in school children’s Bento boxes, at least for school field trips. While to the untrained eye, Kimbap might be mistaken for a sushi roll, that's where the resemblance ceases. It exudes a unique flavor, entirely its own. Kimbap is generously packed with a medley of vibrant vegetables, fish cake, egg, and optional meats, completely up to your preference. Kimbap, a light and breezy on-the-go meal choice, never disappoints with its myriad of delightful variations.
#4 Tteok-bokki 떡볶이
Intense drama is often staged late into the night around a street vendor's cart in Seoul, where the main characters eagerly consume spicy sweet treats. Seated on stools, they exchange affectionate glances and cryptic signals. Tteok-bokki is one of the ultimate street food experiences - a beloved Korean comfort snack. This chewy rice cake, covered in a spicy yet sweet red sauce, will transport you into a quintessential K-drama scene.
A word of caution, however. The term 'cake' in Korean culinary context serves a different meaning than its Western counterpart. In the West, cakes are synonymous with light, fluffy baked goods, known predominantly for their sweetness, and are typically served as desserts. Nonetheless, in Korean cuisine, 'cake' often refers to savory dishes. Another food item that may catch you off guard is 'sundae'. Before you imagine a sweet ice cream dessert, this street cart dish refers to a type of blood sausage. While there are many delicious ice cream desserts in Korea, ‘sundae” is not one of them. So brace yourself for the unexpected - these Korean delicacies may surprise your palate but in the best way possible.
#3 Kimchi 김치
So you might be asking yourself, what's the deal with fermented cabbage, radishes, and onions? It sounds like the cast of a veggie-themed sitcom, right? Well, you bet your kimchi they can be delicious! We're talking about Korea's MVP of side dishes, served as banchan 반찬 at every Korean restaurant. Whether you're wrapping it with bulgogi in lettuce like a gift from your gastronomic guardian angel or adding it to your Guk – it's like the perfect accessory to your culinary couture.
The tradition behind making kimchi, now that’s where the magic happens. Think of it as the 'Real Housewives of Kimchi'! Iconic K-drama scenes showcase women congregated, elbows deep in spices, making Kimchi with the camaraderie that rivals the best family reunion. Shows like 'Crash Landing on You' and 'Hometown Cha Cha Cha' provide hints at seasoning the humble cabbage.
Remember the countless scenes that our dear eomeonis 어머니 bestow a hulking Tupperware of kimchi upon her darling offspring's apartment door? More than a simple side dish, Kimchi is a mother’s love, spiced up and packaged with tender care, acting as the reliable postman of affection. Oh yes, Kimchi is more than just food, it’s a love language.
#2 Korean BBQ 고기구이
Every joyous moment in Korean life seems to be celebrated around a Korean BBQ grill, at least in the world of K-dramas! Birthday cakes? Nah, how about birthday steaks? In Korea, the essence of life sizzles right on the KBBQ grill. Imagine plunging headfirst into this exciting tornado of tantalizing tastes and smells. Banchan dishes sprawled across the table like a colorful mosaic, smoke and steam tango-ing up from the grill, your eyes darting back and forth like an eager referee, and arms crisscrossing like an expert choreography. It's a festival for the senses - a sensory circus! An outing with friends for Korean BBQ will be a party that promises an unforgettable experience.
#1 Ramyeon 라면
Drum roll please… Ramyeon has secured the coveted #1 spot in the Top Ten Heartwarming K-drama Foods' List! Nothing beats the sight of our adored actors unabashedly relishing a hearty bowl of noodles, fully surrendering to one of life's finest delights - the iconic Ramyeon. Does every culture embrace its version of the noodle dish? They do now, with global exports of the infamous Korean noodle at an all-time high. Oh, the joy of slurping up savory noodles, followed by a sip of warm, comforting broth!
Now, let's dive into the specifics. Ramyeon and Ramen - two similar-sounding terms but with their unique charisma. The Korean Herald clarifies these two terms by saying that “Ramen” signifies the fresh bowl of Japanese noodles, while “Ramyeon” symbolizes the Korean instant noodle revolution that's been sweeping the globe. Ramyeon - easy, versatile, and utterly delicious. Think “Buldak”.
Why is Ramyeon so irresistibly satisfying? Think of it as the modern-day manna. It nourishes not only our body but also feeds our soul. The perfect harmony of warmth, saltiness, and slurpiness crafts Ramyeon into the iconic K-drama signature dish. Conquer your cravings with a bowl of Ramyeon, and find yourself at the heart of K-drama cuisine!
